How to get apartment w/o job?

Hi everyone, I'm kind of new to this board; I posted once about abusers and pornography. :-\ I've been going to a therapist who specializes in treating domestic abuse, and it has really turned my life around. I have an escape plan and a divorce attorney now, and am planning to file for divorce as soon as I can get a place to live.

So that's my question: I don't have a job, but I have money for security deposit and rent so I don't need to go to a shelter (I don't want to take away a spot from someone who really needs it). How do I go about getting an apartment? Would my account statements be enough to show landlords/apartment managers? And how much detail should I tell them--will they think I'd make a bad tenant if I tell them I'm escaping an abusive situation? I.e., would they be afraid my abuser would show up and cause problems?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated--thanks!

Contact the shelter and inquire about any housing programs in your area, or if they can give you any tips.

First of all--WELCOME. I am proud of you for getting into therapy-- that's the 2nd best thing you can do for yourself after getting safe! I remember being interviewed for the apt I live in now, which the Salvation Army helped me with because of the abuse I had endured.I was afraid to tell the apt manager about it, but she was totally understanding; she even offered advice too. In my oppinion, I wouldn't want a landlord that didn't understand or back me during such a situation as starting over on your own after abuse! Remember that not only are they interviewing You, but you are also interviewing Them! As for showing them your bank statement-- that's a touchy thing. Do you want them to know the intimate details of your financial status? I would try to just say that you are healthy financially and leave it at that. I will pray for God to give you guidance and favor with potential landlords and a new job. Hang in there. God is with you and so are we!! Keep us posted, please! Deb
