I'm just so hurt

Tonight during an argument in which I told my husband he has to choose to either dump his girlfriend or leave here, he told me my body is "gross and disgusting". Yes, I know he's "pushing buttons" and I should shake it off, but his words cut deep. I have always been slender, till about 2 years ago when I suddenly started putting on weight. I had mentioned it to my doctor, and he was just kinda "well, you're in menopause (I'm 50), this is normal", and while I didn't like it, I resigned myself to it.
Now, just 6 weeks ago, I found out I have hypothyroidism, and that's what caused my weight gain. Let me say, I'm not entirely out of control in the weight department, I'm 5'5" and weigh 139, but I used to only weigh about 108.
I know I've put weight on, but there's a documented medical reason for it, and I think my husband's remarks tonight were just plain cruel. And to make it worse, they were intentionally cruel, he knew he'd hurt me by saying that, and he said it anyway.
I joined Curves for Women a month ago, and I have already lost an inch on each thigh, and 2 pounds, so he knows I'm trying.
Why do his words hurt me so? He's a jerk in a lot of ways, and I know it, why can't I just ignore him? *sigh*

Hi J and welcome -
First off, I (and this is just me) would have thrown my H out if I found out he was cheating on me, but that's just me.

Hi j2you...I agree, your husband's remarks to you were incredibly cruel and wrong.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
