Sometimes certain posts get you thinking. And I think it is productive to discuss things, even if it isn't always 100% supportive. That is how we learn about each other and challenge each other to grow. But can we start a general discussion about counseling, because I think it's a valid point without talking about any one specific person. Just as a general example, not speaking about anyone here, because I don't think there are any DV counselors here, if I went for DV counseling, is it fair to me to have my counselor be involved in an ongoing abusive relationship? How can that person be of any help to me to get my life in order when they cannot or are not actively helping themselves to get their life in order? And another point that I think is productive to talk about, at what point do we stop being victims and become victims by choice-that is making the choice to stay and put ourselves in a place to give the abuser access to continually victimize us?

Hi Rayny -

Since I was reading through the board this morning, I thought I'd take a few moments to reply to your comments.

I don't think it would be practical to have a discussion that involved hypothetical situations like "I wouldn't see a DV counselor who was in a DV relationship" - since it wouldn't be possible to actually KNOW this about a counselor. Also, since we cannot know what profession each

That is what this board needs, qualities to look for in a counselor. Beyond just is knowledgeable about DV, a list of qualities the counselor should have, like the abuser check list. I agree that all support needs to be in place for DV victims, but I have more thoughts on that subject that would probably lead to debate.
