Does anyone know how I can go about getting a restraining order or there's some other type that you can get for when you live with the abuser until I can get myself together and move out?

Welcome soulflower...

You can try looking at womenslaw.org and see what it says about the legalities in your state as to how to go about getting one.

Hi soulflower, welcome -

Generally, if an OP of some type is issued against someone, they are required to leave the residence, unless the party requesting it has already left or has made arrangements to get out.

Hi soulflower...in most states, you can get a restraining order of a protection from abuse order or PFA. The PFA is better because if he violates it, he can be arrested immediately, and if it's just a restraining order, the police can't arrest him and you'd have to go to court to file charges against him. A PFA is better protection all the way around. You can find local information on the website wishful recommended, womenslaw.org. There will be a link under your state for local resources and if you look up the Domestic Violence shelter in your area, there will be people there who can explain your options to you, ask to speak to a court advocate. You don't have to be a resident of their shelter to use their other services. They can help you put together a safety plan and get out of this as safely as possible, and if you need a place to go regroup for a little while, they can help you with that too. Good luck to you.
