Tell me what you think...

Please tell me what you think about the following statement..."When you are over weight everyone can SEE, you've got "issues"...".
This upset me greatly because I think it's biased and unfair. Also it was was a very prominent TV person who said it.
I am curious to see what you all think about that statement. Thanks.

I myself have been overweight in the past, lost 60 #, and then became depressed again and put on 30 #. I guess in my case, I'd have to agree. I do have issues.
It must've been Dr. Phil who said that.
Okay, the two cents from Hollywood...

What a bunch of nonsense! It seems to me that anorectic people have just as many issues as overweight people. And heck, I have a wonderful BMI, and I have issues! LOL
I do think that it's a common solution to eat when you are stressed. I have. But to simply label someone as having issues based on their weight is to generalize in a very dangerous fashion.
Sounds very much like Phil, and remember, he is a tv personality and therefore a showman. He exaggerates things to entertain, sometimes at the expense of the people he's trying to help. If it was O, no doubt she was saying she has "issues." She's always been very open about life's not being peachy.
But I think the phrasing was dorky and without tact. It screams "mental shortcut" and it's a great way to try to shame people into losing. Better to say if you're overweight, there's a reason and it's best to address that reason. "Issues" seems to imply that something's broken psychologically. Personally, my biggest "issue" around extra weight is lack of time to put into losing it. Before that it was lack of time to avoid gaining it.
I have to wonder, if people lose weight because others can see their "issues," will that really make things better? Then we'll all be walking around with hot bodies and hidden issues. Hurray.
Thanks Gabby!!! I agree 100% with everything you said. My friend (ex friend) has a GORGEOUS body, very womanly, slightly overweight but perfect proportions and she takes her life in her own hands cuz she thinks shes FAT. She is a brittle diabetic, born with it, her blood sugars go from the 300's (extremely high and dangerous) to coma levels of 30 and lower within a span of 10 minutes. She has a beautiful daughter. She eats meals and makes herself puke, which in turn drops her blood sugar so fast and so low, to coma levels, that she is disoriented after and her daughter is traumatized by this, cuz anytime her Mom goes into the bathroom after a meal the poor daughter stands there asking "Mommy are you alright? Mommy are you ok?" over and over again until her Mom can reply. She (daughter) has had to call an ambulance many times because her Mom goes into diabetic shocks all the time.
She's HOT. She's got BIGTIME ISSUES. And there are millions more out there just like her.
So who's got "issues", REALLY? Thanks Gabby for posting, and thanks to everyone for posting, I know where I stand now and I wont let O bring me down.
