Hello all,
My 21 year old brother and his 18 year old girlfriend just moved in together.
"but there is probably nothing you can do to facilitate that"
That's what I was afraid of... I didn't really think there was much I could do, but I was just hoping for his sake that someone would know of something I could say to him to snap him out of it.
I don't know why he doesn't support her, we just can't figure him out.
I'm really sorry you're going through this--seeing a trainwreck coming and being unable to stop it is a horrifyingly helpless feeling. I'm sure a lot of people on this board would like to have some magic words that would straighten out their abusers or at least enable them to see reality. If any such words are ever found, this is where people will flock to learn them.
Right now, I think the best way you can help the young couple is to visit the board website( http://cl-wishful78.tripod.com/RDAHomePage.cfm ) to learn all you can about the dynamics of abuse and the options available to abused women. Someday your brother's girlfriend is going to come to her senses, and at that time she will need an informed and compassionate person in her corner.
Thanks very much geoteo, I will take a look at the website and learn what I can.
I appreciate the advice and support and I will definitely be there for her when she comes to her senses - which is hopefully sooner rather than later.
