My dh has a strange family. They aren't very close, as a rule.

So funny - I use to do some things like that - not to that extent but I've been OCD about people coming for a visit.

Just b/c they are related to you doesn't mean you have to open yourself up to them to this extent. I would have trouble trusting them and JMHO a home is a santuary and I don't invite just anyone into mine. Why open yourself up to be vulnerable to them?

No, I don't do that...I wouldn't even allow them to come to my house let alone spend money getting it "company-ready".

LOL! ABSOLUTELY!! when i know that my one sil will be visiting, i go nuts-i clean the house until it shines, i make sure the yard looks nice, i scrub out all the showers/tubs with bleach(i have 3), i steam clean the carpets, i scrub the wood floors. i do all that cuz i know that she SUCKS at housework. and i want her kids, her dh and even her

It's just too much stress trying to impress people who aren't willing to be impressed.

thats true. although liuke someone else said-with the holidays coming up, you have a nice clean house so you can relax and enjoy it. we host euchere parties, bbqs, pool parties and my kids birthday parties are always a lot of people-so when i do a lil extra cleaning for my inlaws-it needed to be done anyway, even though i do keep my house pretty straight. i enjoy knowing that the shower stalls have been bleached, the floor sparkles and the house smells good. even if the inlaws could care less, i like knowing my house has that lil oomph...
so to the op-even if your inlaws dont come or dont care-enjoy your nice clean house. and if they talk about you behind your back, screw em. >;-)
