Discovering our pasts - interesting thread

Even though it's just my first day here, I've already come up with an excellent board topic. A huge topic in my sociology class right now is geneaology, and discovering one's past. My question is, what are your ancestries and family histories (if you know, of course).
My ethinicity is White, but I actually have some interesting roots in my past. My parents told me (and I actually found out by way of Ancestry.com) that both of my great grandmothers were of pure Middle Eastern descent! My great-grandmother on my mother's side was from Lebanon, and my great-grandmother on my father's side was born in Saudi Arabia. I have clear blue eyes from my mother's Swedish side, but I've always wondered why I've had very dark brown hair (sometimes even looks jet black when wet). That explains it. I also found out that my great great great grandfather was of Korean descent! It's the weirdest thing, to the average eye, I look 100% White, but my ancestry says quite otherwise. It's a testament to the fact that we're all mixed with something, and our family histories are interconnected in so many ways! What are some of your ancestry stories?
MEGAN QUOTE:
>>>Yeah, I'm pretty sure my great grandmothers are the reason I have near black hair. No one else in my family has near-black hair like me (my mom is bleach blonde, both of my older sisters are blonde, and my dad has light brown hair). I guess you could say I'm the "dark haired child" lol. I once went through the "blonde phase" during high school, dyed my hair blonde to fit in with my sisters, but I eventually hated it, and decided to be true to myself. A lot of guys I've met also love the dark hair, blue eyes combination (guess it's really in vogue right now with people like Katy Perry and Megan Fox).
I've also noticed that the Swedish part plays in to my height. I'm 5'9" barefoot (which makes me about 5'11" with kitten heels on). Swedes are generally tall, so that's probably the reason for my height as well! :) <<<
Good idea letting your beautiful dark hair go natural again. I used to be 5'8½" and now I'm only 5'4". I miss being tall!! Both of my parents were tall, so I don't know where my height came from. I resemble my mom's Hungarian and Scotch-Irish side of the family though. Gosh, when I wore heels, I was 6' tall!! Loved that!! I could see over heads in a crowd when I was looking for someone..lol!! I hope you can keep your height. Aging has it's good points and not so good points. Losing height is on the not so good side. :(

I like any kind of guys, I don't really gravitate towards those who look like me. Personality is #1 for me, looks are after that. But no, I don't count out guys that don't look like me.
Well I for one can say that I love a dark haired lady with Blue eyes, it drives me crazy. I notice that women are the same though they tend to be attracted to men with dark hair and light colored eyes as well.
As for the height you are tall, I guess maybe the swedish in me also accounts for my height, I am right around 6'1 without shoes and around 6'2 with my boots on.
What is funny though is my son is part Korean mixed with all of my genetics but I think he is going to be tall as well. Right now he is 4' 4" tall and he jus turned 7.
Haha, I love the phrase, "the light and the dark," lol.

Well this is an interesting topic. I am myself and somewhat of a mutt.
On my mothers side= Dutch, Swedish, Irish (Strong on the Irish), English
On my fathers side= German, Cherokee Indian, Irish
As far as I know this is all, but I have actually never gotten into any in depth research. This may be something I look into once I get out of Grad school.
Well, this is an interesting topic! Interesting, too, that you have a mix of Swedish and Middle Eastern! The light and the dark!
I have family members on both sides of my family who do geneology, but I don't and don't know anything beyond my maternal and paternal grandparents.
Maternal...Scotch-Irish and Hungarian
Paternal...English and Dutch
I always think of myself as Hungarian as that was my maternal grandmother and the origin most talked about in my family. I wish I had talked to all of my grandparents about what life was like for them growing up and how each couple met. That reminds me, I started a book of family background and memories for my daughters and never finished it. Must get back to it soon!! If I hurry and finish it, I can give them each one for Christmas!
LOL, you've brought up a subject dear to my and my husband's hearts! We can trace our ancestry back for many generations. My heritage on my father's side is Swedish and maybe German. I say maybe because my paternal grandfather was an orphan, born in New York and was one of the Orphan Train kids. He came to WI and was adopted by an Irish family, so my maiden name is Irish, but from the name on my g'father's birth certificate, he may have had German roots. On my mother's side, I'm mostly French and English, and I can trace my line, sketchily back to the 500's. It's this mixed ancestry that accounts for my sister and brother being tall and blonde, and me being shorter and dark haired. In group photos I always looked like I was adopted, lol!
My husband is mostly Irish and German, but somehow his mother's German heritage gets overshadowed by his father's Irish, lol. He is one of 6 boys (his poor mom, lol) and although I think most of them look more like his mother's side (don't tell them I said that, lol), they've all got the mischievous blue eyes of his father. Our daughter has the same sparkling eyes. Daley eyes, I call them, lol. I think it's eyes like that that are the basis of the saying "When Irish eyes are smiling.... they're usually up to something", lol. My dh can trace his Irish roots back through Canada to Ireland, but it'll take a trip there to dig up much more than he has now. Someday . . .
