What do you think? Do the side affects concern you or is the weight loss worth it?

I don't care who endorses it, I'd never take pregnancy hormones to lose weight.  As for living on 500 calories a day? Sure, it can be done - I did it for about 3 months when I joined a weight loss clinic.  The clinic turned out to be more scam than reputable, though - one day I went there for my meeting and they were closed - taking the money I'd paid them up front with them. But I did lose weight! About 60 pounds in 3 months.  Maybe if they'd been more reputable they could have eased me back into normal eating and I'd have kept it off, but since they didn't, I gained it all back - and then some.  Turns out, eating 500 calories a day makes your body think it's starving, so it holds onto all the food, fat, sugar etc. it can and continues to do that when you start eating more. No wonder the weight came back on faster than I lost it!

So, bottom line, No. I would never go on a stringently low calorie diet or take any pills or injections. The long lasting side effects just aren't worth it to me. I'll keep trying to eat sensibly and get in some exercise and make peace with whatever body I've got.

I have personally been on the HCG plan thru an independent company since June 2012. As of October 2012 I lost 58 lbs, keeping it off and feel amazing! I have never had any side effects other than having lots of energy. Not only have I lost the weight but my friend has lost 63 lbs, and her sister is down a whopping 165 lbs and is on her way to being down 200 lbs in a years time. Not only are we looking amazing we are feeling amazing as well. I have no more hypertension, cholesterol problems or hypothyroidism. Please contact me and I can tell you that this truly is the weight loss cure but be careful only go thru companies that offer pure HCG and no fillers! I can help get you on your way to being healthy, happy and feeling beautiful...I guarantee it!

Hi Donna. Great article. I need a gluten free diet, having Celiac disease. What I've read it recommends a bread stick or melba toast at two meals. I have been making my own gluten free bread in a machine since being diagnosed. Do you think that is an OK substitute? You say you are eating gluten free. Thanks for response

I was on the HCG diet most of 2012 and it was the best diet I've ever been on. I've been on a LOT of different diet plans too.

I found out about it through my female GYN who led me to a naturaopathic doctor who specialized in this diet plan. He led me through the plan. I would not have been able to do it without his help, guidance and support. I had already lost 11 lbs before starting on the HCG plan and then lost another 60 pounds through 2012 for a total loss of 71 lbs. I reached my goal on December 18th, 2012. The HCG that I took was only bought with a prescription from my doctor and purchased at a compounding pharmacy. There are a lot of bogus HCG preparations out there, so anyone doing this should be aware of that. The HCG is just an appetite suppressant, that's all and there are no bad side effects.

As a result, my blood counts are all excellent. I'm off of my cholesterol medication, off of my blood pressure medication, my arthritis pain is gone and I feel fantastic!! All through the diet I felt energized and great and there were no bad side effects. Just getting off of all grains, all dairy and all sugar made a huge difference in how I felt! It took away all of my arthritis pain as those three food groups are a cause of inflammation in the body. I now remain gluten free, dairy free and sugar free except for an indulgence occasionally and the pain remains gone.

Before I began the plan, I did a lot of research of people who had been on the plan and what their experiences were. Of course I found a lot of negative reviews, but you get that with any diet. So, I went searching for the positive reviews of those who were successful with the plan. I wondered how only eating 500 calories per day could be healthy. One person, a man, said what struck me and stuck in my head the most. He said that people who successfully undergo weightloss surgery only eat 300 calories per day for months and they do well with that. I know that's true of people in my personal life who have had weightloss surgery. So, that convinced me that it would be all right to give HCG a try.

My doctor gave me a list of foods to eat. From that, I narrowed it down to just a few selections that I liked best as I do better without a lot of choices. I find that too many choices makes it too easy for me to cheat. I only ate very lean protein and the lowest carbs of fruits and vegetables. That's all along with a lot of water and minimal exercise. Throughout the nine months it took me to lose 60 lbs, my body never stopped losing because it thought it was starving. I maintained a steady loss every week. If I went four days in a row without a loss, I knew what to do to get it going again and the weight continued to come off.

After reaching my goal, along came two weeks of 8 different Christmas social events that my husband and I went to. I began enjoying eating some of the foods that I had not had in almost a year. As a result, I gained some weight back, so then I went to work getting it off again. Right now I'm a few lbs over my goal and losing. The ups and downs will be there forever through maintenance, but I know how to get it back off again and that's what I do. When I regained some of the weight, I could not stand how that felt!! I will never ever gain all of that weight back again!! I allow myself a ten pound leeway, 7 lbs under goal to 3 lbs over goal. That's more realistic and doable than trying to stay right at that one goal number forever.

So, if anyone wants to try HCG, I would advise that they do it through a doctor unless they have a strong enough determination that they can do it on their own, but they should do it with a lot of research first. It is not a diet to cheat on, you must stick to the plan. The important thing is to know your body and what works best for you and you must have an iron clad determination to stick with it. You also must know what to do in maintenance and stick with that also or you'll gain it all back no matter what plan you're on. It's all about choices.

To 'Backspin'...My plan did not allow the bread stick or melba toast. I was totally grain free. It's a good thing my plan was like that, too, for all breads are trigger foods for me. If I had those products in my home during my diet, I would not be able to leave them alone I'd fear.

Staying gluten free to reduce body inflammation, I occasionally eat Rudi's brand bread products. I have a bread machine, but haven't made gf breads yet. I want to be in maintenance for awhile longer before adding gf breads to my plan.

To 'Backspin'...The product I used did not have a 'brand name', it was from my compounding pharmacy under prescription.

I have a friend who gets her's from OfficialHCGDietplan(dot)com. She seems to be doing well with that brand.

I wish you excellent success on your weightloss journey! I just returned from my TOPS SRD (State Recognition Days) weekend where I graduated..with cap & gown and Pomp & Circumstances and all..from TOPS (Taking Pounds Off Sensibly) to KOPS (Keeping Pounds Off Sensibly) weighloss status. It was a lot of fun, exciting and just a really great experience!! TOPS is a great supportive group to join, there are lots of chapters and you'd need to find one that fit your personality and such, for accountablilty, motivation, inspiration, education, and so forth. I was in seven events because of my weightloss. Loved every minute of it!! GOAL..It's a great place to be!! :)
