That is truly truly scary. I have to admit that I had many horrible sunburns as I am very pale skinned and had very light blonde hair and eyebrows. One time I went to Fire Island (off Long Island) and while I had on a thin gauzy cover up, it did no good , I wore no sunblock not sure if it was even available back them. We stayed from 10 am to 9pm . As I finally got off the island, i was brought directly to the hospital. My legs were like elephant sized, I had blood poisoning from it and the skin was just peeled off by the surgeons. I can not tell you how painful that was as I was almost unconscious drifting in and out with the help of intravenous meds. It took about 3 weeks before I could start walking again. Hilary, when I hear of people sitting in the sun with no hat, no sunscreen in the high ray times or stupidly like I did, it makes me want to scream. Understandably. I'm glad your kids realize the importance of sunblock , hats and huts and still I would advise limited time on the beach and before 10am or after 3 pm, etc. I never even got a decent tan. Burn, peel , back to lily white.
Your experience must have been shocking Suzan! I CAN imagine as I see people getting into that condition every Summer here. For some a tan is never going to happen! Sunbeds are worse than the sun and people still use them despite all the warnings .. NUTS! I have to admit that a tan does look nice ::sigh::
