It is difficult to see any name calling and children not treated with the love and acceptance they need and.deserve.

"She has always referred to the 22 month old as "Baby" never my his name. Now that he is a toddler he is "Monster"."

Well, at least that's not quite as bad as calling your daughter a b*tch because she's refusing to pee in the potty! (This was my cousin...)

What do you know about your DIL chilhood? Probably she is just doing the same her mother did. I agree that trying to be perfect is a great mistake. Why dont you ask her why she acted that way in a nice not confronting way. She might give you her thoughts and dependidng of what she says, you might feel free to give your opinion just like a different persepctive. That might help, I guess. You know her more.....So, its up to you.

I can relate to that loss of "exuberant joy", and to add, my inability to allow myself to experience it as an adult.

I think parents have a tough row to hoe these days...perverts behind every corner, abductions from their own beds in the dark of night, drugs everywhere, sex being hailed as the be-all-end-all of human existence, being legally censured against spanking, having schools teaching kids to dial 911 and report parents who "abuse" them.

As a young mother, she's inexperienced, as we all were. She saw an event that likely frightened her (the kissing behind the dresser), and she is likely worried that the behavior could lead to further exploration. I think

Unless you want those 3-4 times a year to go to zero, don't mention a thing to her or offer your disapproval.
