Baby Shower?????

Hope this is the right place to ask this...

My daughter is due March 10th with her first child.. Timing of the shower is the big question.  It will fall around the Holidays.  Do I plan it before XMas, thus competing for people's time and money.  Or after XMas when all the hustle and bustle is over, but people are hard put for money after spending on the holidays?  Does this all sound right, if you know what I mean?  I don't want my daughter to lose out..................Help.  Any advice would be kindly appreciated.....

Hi,

I think having a baby shower a full 4 months before the baby is due would be too early, holiday time or not. And, you really can't anticipate what people's gift budgets are post-holiday any way so don't try. ;-)

Pick a date about a month away from her projected delivery date. Your daughter can make her gift lists at her favorite baby stores in the weeks after Christmas and people will enjoy being able to shop in anticipation of spring and the arrival of your grandchild. As for being "left out," people will buy what they can afford. I know a lot of new moms who scour Mom-to-Mom sales, garage sales, and yard sales for clothes, toys, equipment, etc. for bargain prices. Yes, it's fun to get new things but remember infants grow out of everything very rapidly. My Mother buys 2-year-old sizes for baby shower gifts because the baby often never gets to wear new things because they don't fit in a few weeks after the shower!

Personally, I give savings bonds as an incentive to start saving for the child. The clothes and toys will be long forgotten when its time to go to college! :smileyhappy:

Enjoy the event for what it realy is: a celebration of a new addition to the family and don't try to put a pricetag on it. It's all fleeting. And there will be plenty of birthday parties to come!

Good luck!

The baby is due March 10th.  So having it in Janurary would give her about 8 weeks to get things that she still needs without having to wait until the final month, when you are at your heaviest and tired.  Besides she also works.

If it was me I would schedule it for the last part of January early February.....early enough to not risk having her go into labor before or not so far away your guests won't enjoy her baby bump.  My niece was due mid April of this year and we gave her the shower mid February.  It was perfect....I think that's the best part about baby shower gifts....they aren't very expensive and if someone has a small budget she can still get something nice.

Congrats on the new Grandbaby!

I think that late January/early February is about the right time to have it. That gives your dd about 6 wks to finish preparing, and gives the guests a month to recover from the holidays. Just make sure its not on the same day as the SuperBowl.

You could send out a "save the date" notice before the holidays which would allow people to budget accordingly if they're budgeters, or even shop for baby during the holiday sales. People will be able to spend what they can spend. Some people may give another gift when the baby is actually born too; and will this be her only shower? I assume that you are hosting a shower for the relatives and family friends but might her co-workers also give her a shower? If she has a lot of friends there might be one from some of them, or even a Jack and Jill shower. Since its 5.5 months until her due date her other friends might not even be thinking about it yet.
