Is it me or my supervisor??

After never hearing anything but glowing reviews at my other jobs, I can't seem to do anything right at this one. My supervisor will tell me after one project that my work is too generalized and needs to be redone and then the next one that it's too precise and to be more generalized. Every time I hand in a project there's one more thing that I should have known or done in my research but didn't know anything about it. Was even told today in a meeting that when I was hired on he didn't realize he'd be spending as much time proofing my work as he has. He just thought it would be cursory glances but, as he says, the proofing is taking as long as it does to actually do the project. Well a lot of that is his own fault as he is going in and nitpicking tiny things that no one else would see. He was the only one working on this project until I was hired on for a 1 yr contract so I'm sure he's got it down to exactly how he wants it. This has gotten me so scared of every project I turn into him as I fear what he's going to say about it.
I was told today, which I've known since I started, that 8 projects a week is what I should strive for.
Then was told that I should slow down and be more careful as it's not the quantity but the quality of the work. I then asked if I need to work extra hours if I don't feel I'm going to hit the 8 projects for the week. He said I definitely shouldn't work more than 40 hours and if I don't hit 8 on occasion that it's okay and that I can hopefully make it up the following week. Okay so you tell me it's the quality of work but yet are still expecting 8 projects/week and it's okay ONCE in a while if I don't hit that, but you most likely won't be happy if I don't hit 8, so work quickly!
I am SO paranoid about every single project I turn into him. I was done with one today and had an hour left before I was leaving and I wanted to get started on another one to catch up to my 8 quota but spent the next hour hashing and rehashing what I did to make sure I couldn't find anything wrong. I didn't want to turn one in only 3 hours after turning in the previous one or else he'd probably think I didn't take my time. Every time I hit the send button I just freak out thinking what's he going to say about this one.

Hi mapper.
Could he be new to supervising others? It could be he is struggling to figure out how to work in his new position as well.
Or it could be that he isn't very strong with clear communication.
Hugs,
Actually I think its all of the above! He was the only one in this dept for 4 years. He occasionally has another person there help him out but I am the only other one there full time. So yes I am the only full time person he's had to supervise. He's also very quiet and reserved too so communication isn't the best as I too am reserved. Pretty much all our communication is via email even though he is just on the other side of my cubicle!
He just wants it done the way he would have done it and if he spends so much time nit picking to get it his way then he's not going to get anything done on his end.
It sounds then that he's micromanaging.
It sounds to me like you TWO are just not a good match.
That happens.
Hi Missy!
Aww...Thank you.
Hope your doing well.
