Don't feel guilty. It is entirely your decision to decline an invitation to a wedding, not your mothers. She should be happy that you are being financially responsible, instead of trying to make you feel guilty for not going. My mother plays out the exact same types of antics, and they don't work anymore. I don't think you need to provide an explanation detailing your finances to your relatives either. That's none of anyones business but yours.

First, you NEVER have to explain to ANYONE why you are unable to attend something they have invited you to.

You are taking the responsible attidtude that you can afford the trip to the wedding OR paying your bills. I think you know what the right thing to do is here.
