Should These Nazi-Naming Parents Have Lost Custody of Their Baby?

You know how we all agreed we weren’t going to judge another parent until we’d driven a mile in her minivan? Well, I pretty much crapped out of the deal back in 2009 when I read about Heath and Deborah Campbell, the New Jersey couple who’d decided to legally change their son’s name to Adolf Hitler....

I think anyone who would name their child Adolf Hitler (not just Adolf but Adolf Hitler) is probably a disturbed individual to begin with so it's not surprising to me that they found evidence of neglect and abuse. No, a child should not be removed from their parents based on a name. But when the name is Adolf Hitler... well, you have to question what kind of parents would do that. If they had not found evidence of neglect and abuse, I would not support the decision to remove the child... but like I say, it's not surprising to me that they did find evidence of abuse.

Well that puts a little spin on the conversation!

Does NJ or other states have an approval process for baby names?

FYI: The kids weren't abused, just given odd names. There were allegations of abuse to the state, but nothing was found after their investigation. The 'PARENTS' themselves had been abused as children & were found to be mentally unfit to be parents. Which is why the children were removed from the home...

No, dolly, NJ doesn't care what you name your kid, just so long as its done before you leave the hospital!!!!

I wonder what the details of the parents being mentally unfit were?

I just pulled up an article that I read in the local paper that said:
"an appeals court ruled the couple suffered physical and psychological disabilities that put the children at risk. The court did not specify the nature of the disabilities."

And then I read....that a 4th child....was born in November and that baby was taken into custody as well!!!

So the fact that the government took the first 3 children didn't stop them from having more....and yes....this one has a Nazi name too.

I agree with you that for the most part, the govt should stay out of personal business....but this is crazy! Someone needs to protect these kids & stop them from having anymore!!!!!!

"So, if they just named their son Adolf, it wouldn't be as bad? I agree, btw. What if they had named him just plain 'Hitler'? Is that as bad as Adolf Hitler? "

Well, a lot of names are family tradition. My brother is the 4th to be given his full name. We associate the name Adolf so much with Hitler but the truth is, there are other reasons people might name a child Adolf. It doesn't necessarily have to be some sick salute to a man who represents hatred and genocide. But naming a child Adolf Htiler? There's really no mistaking the motive behind that. I think even just "Hitler" would be questionable too since it's a surname, not a personal name... so why else would someone specifically give a child the surname "Hitler" as their personal name?

" The 'PARENTS' themselves had been abused as children & were found to be mentally unfit to be parents. Which is why the children were removed from the home..."

I don't believe they would remove a child from their parents unless they feared the child to be in danger. Abuse doesn't necessarily have to be physical. The children were in danger for SOME reason.... whatever it is, again, it's not surprising.

No matter how hard I try not to, I just keep envisioning these parents as the white trash kind of people I grew up knowing (o.k. maybe my parents). You know, the one's with cars on blocks in the front yard, wife beater-wearing man swilling a cheap beer and crushing the can, throwing into a pile of crap next to the car... Kids running around in diapers, unattended, in the street... Perhaps some parenting classes would help? Whatever the actual circumstances, I do feel really, really sorry for those kids. Maybe someone should set up a fund so they can change their names as soon as they are old enough!

They might not have been abused, but the guy has a history of violence, and the original article said there had been violence and neglect in the home in the past.

I don't have a problem taking the children away for the names alone. I know they're freaks from that alone.
