"IF" he does call, I would tell him straight out that you made a genuine attempt to be respectful towards them both and show that you do indeed care and want a relationship with them.

I really like the response you gave but the tone of it all actually makes it sound that I care still.
I have no doubt that this is entirely whats led to the downfall of our relationship. SIL gets what SIL wants and because we were so close, she didnt want us to continue that relationship ... I probably posed a threat somehow ...
Looking into the future with my own sons, I do hope that my future daughter in laws will be mature and empathetic and not spoiled ... there are no guarantees but I will aim to ensure that we can be supportive and caring towards each other :) .
