I'll try to make a very long story short ... our best friends (married couple)

I think you are just going to have to be honest with him and let him know that this living arrangment will not work for much longer.

I can understand how you feel.

I agree completely with izzy.

Funny thing is that a relative and I were talking the other night about someone we know who is thinking of letting a friend stay with her “for a few months until she gets on her feet”.

I agree with the others....

In this economy why would they make such a huge change when they haven't gotten their ducks in a row. Why should you continue to suffer the inconvenience for their poor choices??

It's time to sit him down and have a talk with him. Go out to dinner where the mood will be lighter. You should have made an agreement in the beginning with him on how long he will stay, You must tell him that you are trying to start a family and give him a time frame on how much longer he can stay. Give him about another three months. This will get his gears going. Has he been actively looking for another job in his new hometown? Perhaps you can mention to him he could take some time off if he needs to go to interviews there. Sometimes houseguests and temporary housemates get too comfortable in their new environment. Also, ask him if he misses being with his wife. Is it possible there is some kind of trouble in his marriage? If not, there soon will be becasue being a weekend husband usually doens't work out. Perhaps talking with the wife will help. She needs to tell her hubby he is overstaying his welcome and that she misses him.
