It does sound like he's depressed. When he talks negatively, perhaps "counter" his statements with a positive one. Sometimes people need to hear the upside of life. Believe it or not, your positive "counter" statements will help you feel better too. I know it's easier to just avoid such negative people, but when you're dealing with a family member it's difficult to avoid them altogether. If the person insists on staying in a negative mindset, I cut the visit short.
