My in-laws called us last night to let us know that their golden retriever Kate had died. She was 11 1/2 years old and had suffered from hip dysplasia for many years.
DFIL gave her a spa day yesterday: bath, nail trim and comb out. They were headed out for a short walk and she ran ahead of him, which is unusual for her. When he caught up to her, she was lieing in the grass, dead. :(
Although she wasn't our dog, she was our surrogate furkid until we got our own. She couldn't always keep up with our dogs but she loved to play with them in the back yard.
It's so unfair that we so often outlive our pets.
RoseAnn
Thanks, Robyn!
One of my Facebook friends sent me a poem that is a variation on the Rainbow Bridge idea. I printed it out and am going to stop on my way home from work to buy them a bouguet of flowers and drop it by their house.
Our dogs are 6 and 7 and I joke about them not living long but I think that's just a defense mechanism because I'm going to be a weepy pile of goo when they reach that point.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Rosie. I've had a lot of pets over the years and it never gets easier when a pet leaves us. I have two senior cats who are both around 12. I know that I will come apart and stay that way for a long time when it's their time to go.
sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a friend always hurts.

I'm so sorry, RoseAnn. I will be thinking of you and all who loved Kate during this time of loss. I know that it is such a difficult thing to handle, and I hope that you can find solace in the fact that Kate lived a happy life. More important, she knew she was cherished and loved.
Awww am sorry & sad to hear this RoseAnn,
Even though she wasn't yours doesn't make it hurt any less
Am thinking of you & yoru in laws at this sad time :(
My dogs had the same hip problems...we did not want them to suffer.
Same with swh dog ...same problem.
It was a sad time.
