What's Your Engagement Story?

All this Prince William/Kate Middleton-engagement-during-vacation-in-Africa talk has got me thinking... I want to hear more engagement stories! Share it here and it may appear in a later iVillage feature.

I'll get the ball rolling with my own...

My Friday night plans were to go for a manicure with my best friend, then meet my boyfriend for dinner. I picked out a nail color I had been wanting to try for a long time: sapphire blue.

I finished my manicure and called my BF to find out where he wanted to meet for dinner. I was starving so I was ready to EAT. He picks up the phone all sleepy (my BF likes his sleep) and I'm all, "Where are we meeting -- I'm starving!" He implores me to just come home and we'll figure it out. We go back and forth about it for a while. "Just come home!" he says, somewhat annoyed. (Did I mention he's grumpy when he's woken up?) "Fine!" I shout back. (Did I mention I get grumpy when I'm hungry?)

I stew all the way home and walk in the door ready to give him attitude -- instead I find candles and rose petals everywhere with him down on one knee. He asks me to marry him and presents me with the ring: A sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Of course I said yes. Then I marveled at the serendibity of my chosen nail color.

Okay, now it's your turn!

I think a claddagh...with or without stones is the perfect engagement/wedding ring because of the symbolysim. I think if you were to have a ring without a stone the claddagh is a great choice. I can't convince my fiance to get a men's claddagh though...he thinks it looks effeminate lol. I love how they make a great conversation piece when you can explain the meaning of the ring and where it came from.

It is so nice to see someone else with a claddagh!!!

My story is similar to yours; DH and I knew where we were headed *VERY* early on, and I told him I wanted this ring. I do have to explain it often, especially before we were married, and it was on my right hand, but I don't mind telling our story. DH talks about replacing this ring with a claddagh with a stone, but I always tell him I won't wear it, because it won't be my engagement/wedding ring.

How fun reading all these neat stories:)

DH & I had been living together for a while.
We had set it up to go out to dinner.
I was telling my gf how I wasn't in the mood & we discussed what I should wear.
I wanted to wear jeans & she said I had to dress nice, LOL
Still had no clue as to why.
Out to eat we went ..

When DH and I first met we were both seeing other people. We got to talking and found out that we would both be traveling to Phoenix at roughly the same time a few weeks later. We exchanged numbers saying we'd get together while we were there. Little did I know at the time, but he actually went home and changed the dates of his trip so he'd be there the same days as me.

In Phoenix he took me out to see some of the city, some clubs, and hiking. It was an amazing weekend and I remember having this feeling that there was something special there. Unfortunately he was leaving to spend 3 months in Costa Rica. During that time we cooresponded via email; I broke up with my boyfriend and he his girlfriend. He ended up coming back to Denver early for some lame reason (later he told me it was to see me) and we had our first real date on May 25th, 2000.

In August we took a road trip to Phoenix to visit his family and decided to go hiking in the same spot we'd hiked earlier that year. I was just getting over an illness and felt like dirt. It was over 100 degrees and I just couldn't make it to the peak, but he kept encouraging me. After threatening to puke on him he finally let me stop for a rest, where he got down on one knee and pulled out his grandmother's antique platinum wedding ring. We'd only been dating for 6 weeks, so I was more than shocked, but knew it was right. We've been married for just over 9 years now!
