I'm a nurse, but dont know that I have any better answers for you than you're already aware of.
One consideration, as he's apparently not a person who "likes to doctor" much....sometimes folks dont finish up an antibiotic...they take it til symptoms are al gone.....but there are still some bacteria present....that are, of course, the ones MOST RESISTENT to the antibiotic (which is why they are still around when the others have been killed off)....they hang around unnoticed, until the immune system is down or whatever, and when they proliferate........you
