Well of course I agree that making a big financial decision based on emotions is incredibly dumb.

You should calmly advise your DH to follow his accountants advice, and even suggest he get a second opinion from another financial planner, accountant, whomever.

IMHO. There's no reason to create debt, when you don't have to. Meaning, there's no point to using the money you have, to buy a house, when you could easily invest (even if it's a CD) a chunk of it and use it slowly. Versus putting it into a home and then taking a loan against it and paying someone else interest. ESPECIALLY if all it is for is to make his son feel "more comfortable".

Does DH stay at the apt? Does son stay there?

I wouldn't do it. But then again, I've been burned and have learned my lesson about money and other people...spouse or not.

I am a huge, huge fan of keeping assets separated. ESPECIALLY if you are newly-wed. I was married to a man for 16 years, and he spent every last cent of my income, while gambling and drinking away the REST. Girlfriend, do NOT let this man make ANY of your financial decisions for you. If he wants a house so bad - HE can come up with the down payment. DO NOT DO THIS!!!

It's good to make your financial agreements explicit.
