Rob and I rented the documentary Restrepo this weekend. I watched about an hour of it before I fell asleep, not because it wasn't intriguing, I was just tired. It is not an easy movie to watch. It's about an base in Afghanistan and basically what they're doing on deployment to "fight the bad guys". I myself was in tears within the first 5 minutes just thinking about all these guys being away from their family and in harms way.

It sounds like the kind of film I won't be watching for a long, long while. Tom's job is very different now that it was during his previous deployments, but I am still a long way away from being able to watch anything -- fact or fiction -- that hits too close to home in that regard. We have entire shelves of books and films that I'm terribly interested in but most likely won't peruse until our military days or these particular wars are behind us. I do well with films and books about humanitarian efforts, culture, history, and even politics, but anything related to combat or his current position weighs too heavily on my mind.

Ed and I started watching it together, but I eventually stopped about 20 minutes in, after the death scene.

:( It was very hard to watch. I def. DO NOT recommend it to anyone with a loved one deployed.

Well we watched it last week and he left. lol His command told them to watch the movie and this was NOT what to do in Afghanistan. A sense of dread was there but it is the reality over there for the guys.

I think it was an eye opener to myself to some realities that will help me deal with his issues this year. I also spent some time with the squad this past Thursday that really helped me understand what Juan was talking about plus it allowed his squad to see some of his fears. They came through with flying colors so my anxiety about him is better.

I'd rather know than have my fears run wild.
