Hey Anna I'm Dana. My DH was prior AD as well before switching to the Guard. It was a tough transition at first, b/c things were a lot more laid back in his experience. All units might not be the same way. He has found his niche though with his new unit and is much happier there.

Definitely talk with a recruiter and explore all the options. You should go with him and hear what they have to say. This decision doesn't just effect him, but you too.

You know DH keeps talking about retirement and has his 20yr letter to start the process. My thought is the soldier never leaves the man. I have seen so many get out of the military only to turn around a few years later and go back in. Keep us posted on how things go with the recruiter. We'll try to answer any questions you have! Good luck with the fun times. ;-)

Hi Anna, good to see you! What I can say about either is don't expect one weekend a month, two weeks a year. That is so misleading since 9/11. There always seems to be some sort of class, training, etc that is going on.

My DH is Army Reserves and has been for 23+ years. We've had 2 deployments between 2003-2005 (he is currently overseas in a contracting position). Other than that, I think alot of what goes on depends on MOS and type of unit. If you have specific Reserve questions, let me know!

Mic's DH was AirNG and some of the others are NG, so hopefully someone can give you some insight from the NG point. Being on the Reserve side, it seems that the NG mobilized more often in the last decade thanks to all the crazy weather/natural disasters we've had. Army Reserves is not normally involved in those missions.
