to have or attend a BBQ? Lunch, dinner, in between? Do you like a long day of lazing around the grill, or just dinner? And hanging out in the cooler hours after?

Any time!! Although it's so hot here that there's got to be some pool time and some shade involved too.

I usually start them around 3. Then end when the beer is gone and the fire in the pit has gone out.

speaking of fires, while we were in the Black Hills, the only firewood was pine, and it burns like CRAP! Hard to light, smoky, doesn't stay going! UGH!

If it involves a pool or water activities, I'd say more during the day. But I love having cookouts late in the afternoon followed by a nice roaring fire for marshmallows!
