And she is so sick and scared. I don't know what to say or how to help her. He will be gone for nearly a year. How do we help them?

All you can really do is be there for her when she needs you. My husband was gone for the majority of the time he was in the USMC. Anywhere from a week to 6 months. It sucks, especially for the first week or so. It will start to get easier after that first week. She'll start to get into her own new routine. She's a lot more fortunate than I was. There were no computers so we couldn't email and talking on the phone happened maybe 4 times during his 6 month deployment. She will able to email, Skype, etc with her husband, which should make it easier. The most important thing is to make sure they have everything up to date with paperwork just in case anything happens. God willing, he'll get home safe and sound but, just in case, she needs to have everything prepared now so that she doesn't have to worry about it later. My husband sat me down and went over his death benefits, told me what he wanted done to his body if the worst happened, etc. Thank God he came home in one piece but I'm glad I had that information, just in case. It's also important for her to keep herself busy with work, kids, volunteering, spending time with friends and family, taking classes, working out. The very worst thing she can do is sit around and think about him and what he's going through. She'll make herself crazy!
