I signed up for two classes this summer!!! I am doing internet classes to start since Dh won't be here to take the kids. I am so nervous, but excited. I just hope I can pass them. I wanted to take some classes this fall away from home, but Dh wants to try and go home for three weeks in November. I can't miss that many classes right before the end of the semester. So we'll see. it's a start though!

Marie! I'm SO proud of you! I'm taking Intro to Psych online right now. Basically, we have to read a chapter each week and answer three essay questions and a question on a message board on the class website. It's very manageable - and you'll be able to do it when the kids are in school or at night for sure.

Good luck! Let me know if you ever have any questions - I'll be happy to help you out! :)

You go, girl! Yahoo!

Good for you. You will do just fine. You got the motivation. Don't sweat the fall semester too much. I went to my teachers in the beginning of the sememster and informed them of what was going on. They were always supportive. Once your teachers know that you are a dedicated student you should not have too many problems. Maybe visit them before signing up for their class just to see if they will work with you. Good Luck in your classes. Dana

Hi Marie,

Congratulations on taking your courses!

Just a few words of advice from a distance education student:

The best part about DE (or Internet courses) is the convenience, but don't confuse convenience with simplicity.

These courses require more time and attention than traditional courses. There is a lot of discipline involved and you must keep up with the assignments since no one is there to tell you to do so. I find myself going to class EVERYDAY. (yuk!)

I'm in my fourth DE course and I love it, but the hardest thing that I found is it is very hard to 'go' to class when DH isn't there to watch CJ. I usually have to wait until he's in bed or do work on my lunch hour at work because he demands attention (and rightfully so!)

Most nights Cameron isn't home to keep an eye out for CJ, and it's very hard. Cameron takes courses on the base, but he's away from the baby, me, and the telephone and other distractions at home, so it's easier for him.

But I know you can do it, just make sure you discipline yourself. Also, it helps to have a backup plan just in case something happens to your computer. I've found that these DE instructors do not take technological problems as excuses (that is unless it's done by the school). I have a laptop and a PC at home, and then there's always my work computer.

But despite all that, I've managed to maintain a 3.75 gpa. (Darn that B+ LOL!)

I hope this helps from someone who has/is been there and done that.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions, I'm actually getting my master's in distance education, so I am DE student in two aspects, I hope to develop and teach DE when I graduate.

Hugs and lots o' luck!
