Rent or Buy?

What are you ladies' opinions on this?

Brad is a warrant officer pilot (as most of you know), and if we get the duty station we're hoping to get, we're trying to figure out whether to rent or buy.

DH and I have been talking about this one. He's in subs, so as far as we know, he's stationed here for the next 5 years - and then he might get out of the miltary all together (but we're waiting to make that call until we're closer to the 5 yr mark). We compromised on renting a house.

As much as I can't wait to own a home and do what I want to it, I'll never even think of buying while DH is in the military. I do not want the headache of having to sell a house when/if he has to move and knowing I'll only be in a place a few years, I don't want to put money into a house making it perfect only to have to leave soon.

I know many, many people do it and it works out great for them but it is a headache I am not willing to take on. It is way too easy to just get out of a lease and be on our way.

I also love knowing with renting, I don't have to fix any problems that come up. That's a huge weight off when DH is gone. I've had a few issues while he's been to the field or TDY and I have had help dealing with those problems.

I am ridiculously sick of beige walls/carpet in rentals but for now, I can live with it!

Good luck with your decision. I still have my fingers crossed for Riley!

We always rented until we moved here. The only reason we bought here was because we know this is his last duty station and with Randi being a junior in high school, at that point, we will have to try to stay here for a few more years. I was always grateful we rented since I never had to worry about major repairs if he was gone and we never had to stay behind to sell a house, as he transferred. I was especially grateful for this last year with the market being what it was I might still be in VA trying to sell a house. Just some things to consider.

If I could undo one thing from our military career thus far it would have been buying a house.
