Update from the land of craziness

Well, now we are applying for a K-3 visa (nonimmigrant). It should only take two months to get a call from Montreal (after Chicago and Montreal process the application). I run around and do everything the consulate wants (including getting tested for syphilus!), fly there for an interview and get issued the visa. This visa enables me to move and live in the United States. As soon as I cross the border I need to file another package of papers to adjust my status and to apply for a work authorization. Hopefully the work authorization is processed as quickly as they suggested on the website (same day!). After that is all taken care of I sit back and wait for INS to call for the big immigration interview. Sad part of the whole thing is that we could have applied for this back in November and it would have been all completed by now. DH and I could have found a house together, unpacked and figured things out before his deployment instead of being in this situation.

DH is running around like a mad man trying to get everything done for this new application and to prepare some forms that I'll need to have while he is gone to apply for my adjustment of status etc. I feel so bad for him. He leaves in a matter of days and is dealing with all of this along with his regular duties and getting ready for deployment. Hopefully everything we are doing turns out. Something has to work out at some point for us right?

Also found out that there may be complications with my car because my car loan is in Canada. I've had two different stories on that one today but I'm going to stick with the positive one that came from the county office in CO. The lady there told me that it didn't matter where my loan was at, even out of country was okay. Oh and get this! I have to write an examination and take a driver's test before getting issued a CO drivers license! You know I'm going to fail that puppy!! lol Thank God they don't charge for the tests and my Alberta drivers license is still valid while I'm in the process of getting a CO one. lol

Oh, and I found out that I've contracted the plague. The doctor has me under house arrest and on 1500mg of amoxicillin a day for two weeks! I asked when I can return to work or go out and he said not until I feel better. Thank goodness they can't fire a person twice from their job eh?

So now I sit here on the couch, coughing up a lung, and trying to learn everything I can about this new visa and line up all the papers to make it happen.

The doctor figures it isn't SARS but what he did find was a bacterial infection in my sinuses and lymph nodes. He also said I had the flu. As a result I've been told not leave the house until I am feeling better. I haven't had much of a chance to rest because of dealing with INS stuff for the past two days but I'm hoping tomorrow things will be more settled and I can sleep.

Now if I could just get warmed up!

Wouldn't it have been a whole heck of a lot easier to just smuggle you into the country? Just kidding, hon. Hope everything is settled smoothly. But it is no wonder that people just run across the Canada/US border to get into the country, lol!

Hope you feel better soon. Hope DH is successfull in getting you the forms and such that you need!

Huge hugs! Jill

Hey Susie,

I don't see why you should have a problem as far as your car loan goes. We shipped our F150 back from the UK and our loan for it is held by a bank in Germany. We've had no problems getting it registered or anything.

Maybe this will be the one thing that goes right!!

I took the Missouri driving test when I got here and it is a darn site easier than the British version, The test was common sense stuff and I even got a lady trooper to drive with.

I'll be thinking of you and sending speed up vibes to the INS!!!

Hmmmm..... you are officially at the point where if you don't laugh, you're going to cry. Can anything else POSSIBLY go wrong??? Wait a second, I better not ask that or else you never know what may happen.

Take care!

Oh, Melissa, DH and I have adopted the motto that "no matter what, it could always be worse".

Did find out that I can "lie" to the Montana DMV and get a MT driver's license without rewriting or redoing the driving test. Just a quick switch across the counter. Have to show that I'm living in MT but she said a letter or a bill will do. I can arrange for that to happen. They will then mail me the permanent to the MT address I give. The license will then be sent to me in CO so I can do a switch down there. I'm not sure I'll do it but it will make things easier when I get to CO. I will do anything to reduce the running around and paper work I will have to do when I move.

Now I'm going back to bed...still feel like I may die.

Hey Susan,

I am glad you got the INS part almost squared away... that's a small victory. I have been a legal alien (that's what INS calls me) in this country for 12 years, and dread dealing with INS. There is nothing I dread more than INS, so I don't envy your situation. I just wanted to say, use proper legal procedures to get your driver's license. If you're caught taking short cuts, it may jeopardize your INS application. They may not bar you from this country but they can sure make your life hell. Have I totally managed to put a damper on things? Hope you get here soon.

Susan, you poor dear! I know you're having a rough time, but I have to tell you that your post made me giggle. Not that you're going through all that of course, but that you're still laughing about it & making jokes! I'm praying for you guys daily that everything will finally work out for you guys! You kind of remind me of that JoDee Messina song "Bring on the Rain" right now! Do you kwow that song? Anyway, just wanted you to know that I was thinking about you! And just think - with that silly ol plague keeping you from work, you have time to figure out your new visa!
