Do you have kids in school?

 What grades are they in?

Are they home schooled, private, public, cyber???

Were they excited to start? Or NOT so much?

I have two homeschooled kids...5th and 10th grades.  DS took a break from about May to July and then got started with a "light" schedule (2 days a week, and no spelling!) until the end of August.  Now we're on our usual 4 days a week schedule.  DD is in treatment for multiple emotional disorders whose root it turns out is because she was molested at daycare when she was younger.  So we are in the midst of sorting that all out and she's doing what academics she can (and making good progress) but if she has a bad day, we're not sweating it.  She's 2 weeks into the school year and doing ok, except she can't find her biology disc.  Oopsies.

Sue, I'm sorry about your daughter. I didn't know that, and I can't imagine how difficult it must be for her and your entire family. When did you find out?

We found out earlier this month.  I've suspected that she might have been abused but she always denied it when I asked.  But knowing that he committed suicide rather than go to jail, because a daughter was bringing some sort of legal charges against him, I had some suspicions.  I never had told dd what I knew about the legal matter because I heard it at work, but I finally said "HIPPA be damned, this is my kid's health, versus a dead creep" and brought up what I knew, and that opened the floodgate. She's slowly telling me more.  I'm working on getting her a sexual abuse counselor, in addition to the counselor she's seeing now whose specialty is eating disorders and self-harm.  The wheel is turning a bit slowly there but at least she knows I'm working on it and that gives her confidence.  (He committed suicide 6 years ago, when dd was just shy of 9 years old, so the abuse isn't recent...and it happened when she was small.  I don't know how small.  But young.)

She has so many positives.  She has a recovery project on Tumblr with over 700 followers.  In addition to posting positive recovery items, she answers questions and provides encouragement to specific people.  On Suicide Awareness Day she wrote 80+ names on her arm to show support for others who struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts.  She writes songs and is working on recording a CD.  She has so many ideas and things she wants to do to help others.  She has become a very vocal advocate for people with mental illness and especially the things she is struggling to overcome.  She is presenting a concert of her songs, along with sharing her personal testimony, at our church this weekend, and she has out-of-town friends, supporters, and Tumblr followers who will be attending.  (I hope it sets our congregation on ear, because there have been some not-so-nice things said and done to her by well-meaning people who had not a clue what a mess her life is.  I hope they go hide their heads in shame after they find out what she's going through.)  She's just a really terrific girl and I am anxious for us to emerge on the other side of all of this.  Some days are steps backwards but she stays positive for the most part and keeps working hard.  I admire her so much.

Your daughter sounds like a really strong and positive young lady. It's great that she's been able to take a bad situation and turn it into a way to inspire and advocate. Let us know how it goes this weekend! -And boo-hiss to the people who were being horrible. I hope they apologize to her.

Her concert went incredibly well.  At least 80 people came to hear her, and she had about 280 hits on the ustream broadcast link.  She was so poised and professional even though she was nervous.  Even when she shared the hardest part of her story (hard because it's so new and raw) she choked up a bit and then pulled herself right back together and went and sat down and sang the next song.  I didn't receive any direct apologies from anyone who has criticized her appearance...but I did receive a lot of support, and comments about how far apart we've grown, that we don't know what is happening in each other's families anymore.  I know there are people whom I will ask about their kids or family members, and they don't even take the time to reply and ask about mine.  Glad iVillage isn't like that :smileyhappy:

Just catching up after a crazy hectic month.

Sue, Your daughter sounds like she is growing into a super strong woman. It takes so much strength to stand up there and speak of the most horrible things she has gone through. Not too many people can do that. (((hugs))) I hope she continues to gain strength and grow knowing she is helping so many others :smileyhappy:
