I'm just curious how many times it took for your DH (or you) to become an officer.

Right now, it seems to take FOREVER!!! DH served 4 years in the USMC, then went to the extended format academy (year long, part time so he could still work full-time) with his GI bill, and over the course of the past 18 months or so has probably applied to 20 agencies across CA. Fingers crossed he gets something soon, but still no luck for us.

Good luck and Semper Fi to your brother.

I don't know...exactly. My dh is a lot older than I am, so I wasn't part of his life when he first entered law enforcement. I do know that when he was young and just out of the Marines, he couldn't be an officer because at that time there were height requirements and he was too short. Then when they did away with the height requirements, he was "too old". He finally put himself through the academy and then got hired by a sheriff's department when he was in his later 30s.

I do know that there's fierce competition for law enforcement jobs. There aren't many job openings...and there are a lot of unemployed police officers. Add in new academy grads hoping to find a job, and the odds are pretty well stacked against you unless you really really shine. I'm sure it's not that way in every state tho, so hopefully where you brother is looking to apply won't be so hard to get into. Best of luck to him!

The first three times he made it all the way through until the final cut. The last time, he didn't get past the physical. BIL is a jail officer, and there was an incident there where he was demoted. The first time he tried out, he didn't get it because there were other guys who had been through the academy. The second time was right after this demotion. The third time, I think the demotion was still on the minds of those doing the hiring (I don't think one person on the panel liked him for whatever reason). This time, he didn't even make it past the physical. He had a lower back injury from years ago that sometimes gives him grief. This time, it started to kick in during the sit ups portion of the physical, and he had to stop. I think he got too comfortable with getting through the physical part (it was always a cake walk for him) that he didn't try to prepare his lower back for the sit ups. I think he has one more year where he can try again before he hits the age cut off (36).
