when is with-holding information toxic to a relationship?

I had originally posted my dilemma but the anxiety was too much for me to handle so I ended up confronting my boyfriend and then decided to delete my post. My issue was that I felt he was with keepinginformation about his history with a female friend from me in order to "protect" me but luckily it was nothing. I was curious if anyone else had this issue..
