Do any of you know any good "cheer-me-up-after-a-breakup" kind of movies?? Or books? This is going to be my first after-breakup weekend and no plans so far... I don't mean stupid commedies, but movies that inspire, encourage, give hope and basically get a message accross that everything always works out for the best... Anyone?

Hi
I agree with the choice of Serendipity (2001) because it is nice and gives out the message that everything will work itself out, if it is meant to be, but I would suggest a bit more fun by choosing the movie French Kiss (1995). It is relatively funny and really nice to watch especially if you like Europe. Besides, the woman finds the right guy for her in the end after going through a bad break up. It's one of those movies where you realize that what you think you want is not really what you want once you get it and things do turn out in the end the way they were supposed to turn out.
The other two movies that come to mind are Someone like you (2001), and Only You (1994).
The first one I mention is about breaking up and finding the right guy, and the second is about looking for that special someone when he is right in front of you, except you fail to see it. You can also check out America's Sweethearts (2001)or Playing by Heart (1998)because they are also dealing with romance and break ups.
You can check out the Internet Movie Database for cast and movie information.
Sorry to tell you, most of them are assigned as feel-good comedies, but I suggest you give them a shot, since they are nice to watch, will take your mind off a break up and may make you laugh once in a while.

Although this is my first breakup, I myself am partial to British costume dramas. I rented the Pride and Prejudice mini-series this weekend (with oh-so-tasty Colin Firth) to escape my own hurt, but Sense and Sensibility will work...Emma...Mansfield Park...The Buccaneers (if you can find it, it's AWESOME). *sigh*
As for books...hmmm...well, it's TOTAL brain candy, but I like Jemima J for an "everything works out right in the end" type of tale.
Hope this helps!
Katie,
Have you seen "Terminal" with Tom Hanks? It is a drole movie and reminds you that it is what you make of the situation (and the people around you) that determine who you are. I especially like the way "love interest" aspect of the movie was handled.
Enjoy the popcorn.

Similar boat myself.... I found I wanted empowering movies, not romance-centered ones... I chose:
Mona Lisa Smile
Under the Tuscan Sun
The Joy Luck Club - definitely this one! great lines to remind us what's important in life
The Terminal
What I like about them is that the "point" isn't to win the romance but to maintain or strengthen ones character. With lines like: "Losing him does not matter, what matters is that you will be found." and "What do you want from him? Tenderness. Respect. Then tell him this and do not come back until he can give you these with both hands open." Aren't moms great? :)
Others would be any of the Jane Austin movies. Also... the Jane Austin's Guide to Dating book by Lauren Henderson. Great concept - don't fall for superficial qualities, have faith in your instincts, be prepared to wait for the right person, etc. Henderson will cite a Jane Austin example, then a real life example, then go through the do's and don'ts. It's cute but also practical, stop-playing-games-and-start-respecting-yourself advice.
Good luck!

I am on my 6th weekend post break-up... it gets so much easier as time goes by! Although I'm still in the watching movies curled up with my favorate blanket phase. Lately I've been watching DVDs of episodes of the sitcom Frasier. I love this show... Frasier is smartly written and most of the characters are always unlucky in love (especially Frasier) but manage to stay strong. I've exhausted all of the Sex and the City episodes... I highly recommend watching these as well! All can be found at your local Blockbuster.
Also, I love Bridget Jones' Diary!
Take care of yourself!

Pianoguy gives FRASIER 2 thumbs up!
Yes, I agree with you. Frasier is great! Not sure why I've found it so comforting during this time... but the humor is so smart and subtle.
Two other movies that are good post-break-up flicks: Hope Floats and The Mirror Has Two Faces.
