Was my response not what he wanted?

So the ex sent me an email after 5 days of no contact. HE broke up with me almost two months ago but has contacted me occassionally, then asked me to join him at a family function for the 4th, to which I said no (we don't live near each other but the family function is about 2 hrs from me). Anyway, his email said how he has this repeating tape of me in his head, that he's taking things day by day but it's hard and he hope's I'm doing better. I just responded that I knew what he meant but didn't elaborate. We exchanged a few more emails about nothing in particular and now I haven't heard back from him. I'm sort of beating myself up for not letting him know how really miserable I've been...is that what he wanted to hear? But would it have really mattered??

Perhaps he wanted to hear how miserable your life is without him and how much you are hurting and how much you want him back - but honestly...it sounds like he is just making small talk and learning to let go little by little - day by day.

IMPO, this guy wanted a boost to his ego, he wanted you to tell him how miserable you're feeling without him. He's been contacting you after the break up. Since he didn't get what he wanted from you then his solution is to leave you alone. There was no feedback from you to boost up his ego. Time to heal, put him behind you and close this chapter of your life.
