while on the phone talking to my mother who is married, about my situation w/my ex. she told me that until you have a ring on your finger-everything is fair game. people are allowed to see/date whomever they like whenever they like.

i value my mother's opinion a great deal and i don't think she would tell me something that's not true.

so my question is: when dating is everything fair game?

I don't think it's that clear/cut, black and white. In my opinion it depends on what you've discussed with your partner. If you and your partner have agreed that you will be exclusive, then you should remain faithful to the agreement. To say "We'll we're not engaged or not married" seems a little disingenuous to me.

There are several levels of commitment. And as people go through each level it's good to pay attention to how they react ...

I would say yes, your mom is right...with one important exception: you're not allowed to LIE about things! If you have made an express agreement not to date or sleep with other people, for example, and you do anyway, that's totally NOT COOL.
