Why do they say "Lets be friends"....

...after they break up with you? My ex was the one that broke up with me, but in his break-up speech to me, he says that we can still remain friends. Why do some people say that when they ended a relationship? In most cases, when two people break up, they aren't friends anyway.

I know what you mean fish4zoey....my ex said the same to me this past weekend after he broke it off. I'm wondering if there is any possibility that friends means he wants to keep me in his life, as a just in case?...I'm trying not to read into it too much.
I do know that my roommate's exbf said the same thing and she told him no, don't speak to me ever again. A year later she and him became "friendly" again and he asked her back, begging her with roses and everything. This was 2 years after the break up. Sounds like a long time, but I guess if he asked her back then anything is possible. (i always thought they were the perfect couple).
Mainly because they're hoping the sting of the breakup doesn't hurt quite so bad if they offer or ask for friendship.
This is going to sound neurotic, but my ex said that to me when we broke up, and then rang me a couple of nights after, drunk, saying it was the hardest thing he's ever had to do, that he wasn't sleeping. That was 3 months ago about, and now he completely ignores me (we work together) and it's realy awkward when we are in teh office togther, and often catch eachothers eye then look away.
Just saying that made me think is there any hope? I know it's stupid. I do. I just can't get him out of my head, I think about him all the time, he's in everything I do, even now.
