Your stuff at an ex's

So you broke up, and say it has been a few months of no contact, but you have some stuff at your ex's place...would you contact him to try to claim them back, or would you just say "goodbye" to them...not big items...just like shoes or clothes, or what not.

And vice versa...you have something of his, but he has made no attempt to contact you, or get them back from you when you once asked him to get them. Would you just toss them out, or contact him again to check if he wants them?

If you've lived without it for a few months, you don't need it. Unless it's irreplaceable and sentimental, or very valuable (and I'm sure it's not or it would have been a priority sooner), it's not necessary to retrieve or return. You could ship his stuff to him, if you want to get rid of it but feel bad throwing it away, or maybe just donate it to charity. You do not want to do the emotional damage of having contact with him over something as small as stuff you've lived without for months now.

I thought about the shipping the stuff back to him, but I guess I figured it wasn't up to be to go to any extra length to get his belongings back to him and it should be his responsbility to come and claim them. But since he has made no attempts, I also don't feel like I should contact him, but I also don't feel right about just tossing them away either.

I would definitely let the stuff at his place go, and I would put his stuff away in the back of a closet for the time being. If he ever calls you to ask for it, send it to him, but otherwise, forget about it. When you get around to cleaning out your closet it a year or two and it's still there, then you can throw it away without guilt ;-).

Donate his stuff and take the tax credit. If he calls, you can alway tell him where to pick it up....real cheap.
