It sounds to me like he is having one of his *busy* days, as you put it. It also seems to me that you are totally overlooking the fact that whether it's one email or a whole slue of them, you are still in an affair. Are you planning on ending it? If not, this isn't the board to be on. In my experience, there is no 'being friends' with an exAP. For one thing, it's very hard to make a 'friendship' out of something that was based on lies and stolen moments and physical attraction.
