I don't know about you, but I find comfort knowing we are not alone when we are in pain. I can't think of one person I know who hasn't had to traverse a significant loss or some type of deep emotional pain, whether it be divorce, or death, or a major life crisis. Even here, in the relative anonymity of this support board, all of us have been wounded and are in some phase of our recovery. That's quite a comfort to me, and I hope it is to you too, particularly to our scared and sad newcomers.
I frequently listen to music. It can set the tone for the day and speak to me in ways that are almost spiritual.
I listen to all types of music genres, but one that I like best "Folkana" - a kind of folk music. So many wonderful stories in this genre that can be quite validating. I sometimes think, "here's and instance where a really famous band/singer is clearly writing about their own pain. I can identify."
I particularly *LOVE* Florence and the Machine's "Shake It Out." Look for it online if your unfamiliar with it.
Here are the powerful lyrics with which perhaps, you too, can identify:
Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play
And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn
And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around
And our love is pastured such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaaah!
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh woah!
I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back So shake him off, oh woah!
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back so shake him off
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine romance but its left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn
Oh woah, oh woah!.
And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark and right at my throat
Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh woah!
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah!
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back So shake him off, oh woah!
I love that song! I heard it while watching Smash first.... Funny that it is resonant this week of my own feelings. It hit me that at 2 1/2 years post A I should have let go/gotten over some things that I've been holding on to vey tight fistedly. Off to listen to music now :)
