One of the many things I often disscussed with my AP was politics, amongst sharing many quotes and poems. Today I came across a quote that I really wanted to share with him but, since I am desperately trying to maintain the NC rule, I'm sending this message to you all instead. Otherwise I fear I will use it as an excuse to make unnecessary C via email. So here it is:
"We must insist on listening to the voices of a true, honest, complicated past, unafraid of controversy or tragedy, but equally drawn to those stories and moments that suggest an abiding faith in the human spirit, and particularly the unique role this extraordinary and often dysfunctional Republic seems to have in the poistive progress of mankind." -Ken Burns (Documentary filmmaker, best known for 'The Civil War,' 'Baseball,' and 'Jazz.')
I got it from the Starbucks series, 'The way I See It #20' Normally this would spark great conversation between the two of us (my AP and I) about what the quote means and how it applies to the political climate of today. It also makes me think about my past and the resiliency of the human spirit. Human beings can endure almost anything. I am reminded that good can come out of even the worst situations. Hey, my H and I wouldn't be in M counseling today had it not been for my A. Also, I wouldn't have sought help for my personal issues had I not met my AP. Although I wish it didn't have to take an A for me to take a look at my marital issues and personal problems, I am grateful for God's mercy nonetheless and see my present challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. As I reflect on the quote in relation to ending my A, I begin to realize we must insist on listening to the truth of the past, drawing on the inspration of the present, and having faith in a better future.
