Most voicemails leave a tag on them when you call. Even if his phone was off when the first message came through, the person listening would hear 'message from phone number XXX-XXX. . .'

If his wife knows your number because she calls you about Avon, wouldn't it seem really strange to her that your number called his phone, and you were asking for some mysterious stranger?

I can't understand how that worked.
