Whenever I encounter drama that does not directly involve me, I walk away. Taking a time out from AP may help for you. No or limited contact with him (with ground rules of not mentioning his STBX) may be a good way of dealing with it.

This would be a good opportunity to observe how he handles things for I believe a person's true character comes out in crisis or stress.

it is indeed a mess.. a big driving factor I think for both of the exes (let's just call them that for simplicity) doing this is the feedback they get from you and AP on a daily basis and that pleases them to no end I am sure. One way to cut this feedback off is to trick them into thinking you and AP are no longer communicating. It is best to agree to this and cut off comms for a while and tell exes that you and AP broke off for good. You need to break this chain shared among four people. In a while, the novelty of pissing off you and AP by the exes will wear off and you can get back together. This will also give your AP some time and space to get the divorce progressing much faster..
