I'm happy that you are causing yourself less pain. That's the goal, right?

If a person's only problem in life was a lack of money and they won the lottery, I suppose they could go from frustrated/depressed to happy over night but I would venture to say that content is on the slow road to happiness for the average problem set, for the average person. Even a rotten mother-in-law moving to France would leave behind a wife that allowed her mother to be that way. What else would DW be

????

I don't understand what a wife has to do with "allowing" her mother to be "rotten"? I always thought mothers could be good or rotten all on their own?

A man will generally put that rotten mother-in-law in her place unless the wife intercedes. Take it from a guy who has about the worst MIL imaginable, but a wife who knows how 'leave and cleave.'

Mrs. Hold just sent me an e-mail saying she recognizes how supportive I have been lately and she appreciates it.
