Sorry, nothing about oral sex in here, I'm referring to this new board format!

I hated this new board structure when I logged on first yesterday but then I got to like it or I thought I did. Now I hate it again. Too annoying. Too slow. Too many threads crammed in on one window and yet too many windows. Can't figure out which links I've read and not read. Hate that the icon doesn't appear with the subject line. Can't stand the fact that once a new post is added to a folder the whole folder is dragged to the top carrying the dead weight of *all* the other threads in the folder (I thought this was a good feature but now it's becoming cumbersome because you have non-relevant posts taking precedence over very relevant or heart-wreching posts). Takes too long to find a specific thread. Too time-consuming to post. Daft that you get the option to preview your message twice (come on ivillage, do you guys think we have *no* confidence in our writing skills or that we're even *that* bothered about making a few spelling errors???). I detest the fact that 'Horoscopes' is an option in the profile section - imo it kinda belittles the seriousness of some people's motivation in being here. We discuss our marriages here..... on other boards we discuss our children, their health, their future, their problems etc. and we post on debate boards where we discuss the fact that the world is at war... somehow I can't quite co-relate that to the fact that ivillage wants to know my star-sign.

But I do know why they've done this.... basically (and this is just my opinion) this new format came about in order to maximise the amount of hits.... we *have* to open a message to see the icon (hit), we *have* to check many threads that we've already read cause we don't remember reading them what with them all being the same colour (more hits), there's no opportunity to view a bunch of posts at once (more hits). I reckon ivillage Ads are priced according to board usage i.e. amount of hits per day/per week etc. The more hits, the greater the market appears to be and hence, the more expensive the Adverts are. Well it's business, I can't knock that but still, does it *have* to be so user-unfriendly?

Any more defectors from the 'Actually I quite like this new format' camp into the 'Oh no I don't, it's driving me up the walls' camp?

PS.... sorry Mel! I know I said I liked it but not anymore. Though I still think you are doing an amazing job at helping people adjust, especially considering what they have to adjust too.... you're being asked to 'sell' a bad product. lol

Thanks for letting me rant folks and in the General Discussion folder too...... ooooooh, I'm such a rebel!!! lolol

Hey Deb ... I'll let u in on a little secret, but u don't get to tell anybody else! lol

*whispering* Actually i don't find the new format all that great either (oh are they going to toast me for this!! LOL)! I totally understand what you are saying, and agree with you on many, if not all the points *sigh*

Well, since i volunteered to be a cl, then i feel that i should uphold my responsibility and duty as a cl -- to look out for the interest of BOTH my boardies (a favourite cl term for members of a board lol) and the uhm, organization that i'm volunteering for. I have the responsibility to help people adjust to this new shift as best as i can for ivillage, but at the same time, i'm trying to find out ways on how to make things easier for the members and making sure that members' thoughts, comments, gripes and requests gets heard "up there".

I read psychocupid's post in one of the threads here about the difference between a paying site and a non-paying site, and i have to admit that it is glaringly different. As a free site i do understand that ivillage needs to provide itself with means of revenue to keep everything running smoothly for the members, and yet at the same time keeping members happy. It's a very difficult balance to strike. Lots of things can go wrong and there can be alot of unhappiness. I wish that they could put aside the advertising aspect and just try to tailor their services as best as they can for the members, but that won't happen until they say, "Ok we are charging for use of the message boards and other services", and the majority of the people here probably wouldn't, or would not be able to to pay for that.

I'm sticking it out until i can't take it anymore lol. But right now, i think that this board (and the other board that i cl) has one of the most intelligent and wonderful group of members, and i would hate for this "community" to fall apart just because of some commercially oriented user-unfriendly change (scratch my first comment, they are going to FRY me for this ... LOL), so i'm trying my best right now!

Anyway, if it helps at all, currently, the tech people are:

-- looking into making the links change colour depending on whether it's been read or not

-- looking into taking away the preview page and loading directly into the main board after posting

Plus many other little bugs that they are sorting out. It's still very early into the launch, and they have their hands full, so they are sorting through the problems one by one, and there will probably be more tweaking in days to come!

Well ok, i'll get off my soapbox now lol ... i would hate for this board to lose any members over this format change, so my hope right now is for everyone here to persevere and be here for the GREAT things that this community IS, and not go away for what it's not.

Post and vent all you need Deb! Sometimes, it's the only thing that helps lol ...

*HUGS*

PS: Btw, you aren't going to come back later and decide that you want to edit out some parts are ya? :-P Just teasing lol

My first problem was that I thought it would be nice to have picture with my profile but I'm stuck with a bear because I didn't care for the other pictures.I spent most the day rereading becasue I never remember where I left off yesterday. I think the best format is the outline but I think they should change the color of messages you have already read. There's my suggestion.

Psychocupid is not posting and she used to always be here.

Deb, not sure if you've discovered this yet, but in order for the posts you've read to be "marked read" you have to be logged in to read. Although I do like this new format, it is rather annoying to have to log in every time I want to catch up, often I don't have much time, and just want to skim through til later, but if I don't sign in, then later I have to go back and click on every post I read so it disappears from the unread list.

I agree w/those below in the OT section who said there should be a "mark as read" feature, I think you were one of them:) I also miss seeing the titles of the threads, too, without having to use the outline view feature.

As for old topics moving to the top when someone posts to them, I kinda like that because there are days when I can't get to the board, or have no time to post, and I'll read stuff the day after it was originally posted, and by that time there have been so many new posts that I don't bother posting b/c I figure no one will read it anyway, or I won't get any feedback/be able to give others feedback since they won't see it. I do agree, however, that there is a difference between adding something of substance, and beating a topic to death. It can become quite monotinous.

Plus, I'm the HL...and all HL's know change is BAD!!!! LOL That's how we all got in this mess to begin with!

Agree new board structure annoying in many ways - have you noticed that you can't go "through" a thread in the order it appears - instead, you have to read the posts in the order they were posted - unless you go BACK to outine view and click on the exact one you want. When you're reading a post, you don't know which message you want to read next without going back to outline view, cos the list of posts at the bottom is just a list of numbers,. Often with ongoing threads I just want to read the new stuff, I don't want to read through all the thread again - but I can't tell which are the new posts. On the old board, on my browser, the posts I had read came up in a different colour.

Things I do like - all the posts are titles in outine view, yoiu don't get that "3 messages" thing where you didn't know where you were.

Can't believe ANYBODY who actually USES the boards would have come up with this new format though - it is SO cumbersome clicking back and forth. When I click on a post in outline view I get a little window opeing with the screen the post is on, but the text is not visible, I have to scroll down to "find" the text.

And on the subject of ADVERTISING, I am NOT impressed at having to look at ads for genital wart cream ever morning when I visit the board.... Please someone remove this ad!

One of the reasons I'm not posting is that by the time I get through a thread, I have to be somewhere. Like right now I should be in the shower.

All this spam is annoying as heck, and penis enlargement pills, what a crock! It's insulting to have that stuff on a serious site.

As to the paid boards, I think the one I go to is about 130.00 a year, most of that is picked up by memebers who can afford it, and those that can't don't pay and nobody belittles them for it. It's a non-issue, there's just a fund drive so to speak once a year and it's covered in a few days. Plus you can make the board public or private and not have to deal with trolls and 13 year old making up stories. I'm not advertising for members LOL it's just the difference is amazing and the price isn't that outragous. Anyone interested in seeing the difference, email me and I'll give you the URL. Please don't delete me for that, it's not a CL board and I'm not trying to steal memebers here, just showing you what could be done even on a site like this.

shannonc@heartland.net

We might be able to come up with a happy medium between the two types of sites! :-) I have noticed that lots of people aren't posting and I'd hate to lose our 'group' there are so many people here that I depend on for support. But this setup is not really working very well as it stands. Where is everybody!!!! :-(

Also it says I'm repling to someone from someone, and I can't seem to just post in general under a thread. I haven't had time to redo my profile, which the old one is gone of course. UGH! It's giving me a headache and now I'm late getting ready for work. I could have read the whole 'old board' by now, instead I've only read one thread.

Psychocupid, I think you should delete or edit you email from your post (before it gets a reply, you can). Spammers have software that "trawls" websites looking for emails & you are likely to get inundated with spam or just freako emails at the address you posted.

As for blipping through all the threads in a message, you can avoid that by doing what mel said with the "outline view" in her post. Let me know if you need help; I really think it works!

Hi PC, you can still access your old profile by going to the MAIN iV page and logging in from there/accessing it from there. Old profiles will be up for one month to allow members to move or copy information from there. If you're not sure how to get to your old profile, let me know and i'll come up with a direct link for you!

You can reply to a general thread by click on the first/main post in a thread. Well, it still comes up as "from x to x", but that's one of the quirks in this format i guess. However, if you view it in outline view, it will come up as a reply to a general post :-)

I totally understand what you are saying about paid sites vs. unpaid sites ... *HUGS*

Hi Strawberry, unfortunately neither i nor the CMs have control over what ads are displayed :-( I think that's the sphere of marketing or something ... but yes i agree, ACCKK, what poor taste! I have all sorts of dating and singles ads on my MD board where the ladies there are all in commited relationships! Sheeeesh, somebody should tell those people in marketing and advertising how to do their jobs!

What i do is just scroll down to the boundaries of the posts and not scroll any further. Actually, i haven't even noticed there were ads down there until i read about many people talking about the inappropriateness of the various ads in various boards, and then i scrolled down to take a look-see and yuck!

The tech people are working right now to see if they can make links change colours when read. They will also be considering setting up the outline view as a default view for the board as an option.

Well, at least i am allowed to sigh ... lol *sigh*

LOL Mel. No, I'm mad and I'm proud so I'm sticking with that message. lolol

Glad to hear ivillage are working on some of the glitches (I've posted a msg. too under Off-Topics re: changing colours).

I agree, it would be a shame to lose posters because of the technology but also, I think, even those who stay will find it a lot more time-consuming. However, we'll struggle on......... lol
