A paper published November 2009, examining large-scale datasets from Germany, UK and Australia, is titled:


You can't be happier than your wife: Happiness gaps and divorce.

Nominally, the study finds that if a wife is less happy than her husband, then it is a significant predictor for increased likelihood of divorce.

It seems to me that men tend to want their wives' approval much more than the other way around, just my experience and observation. (Neither one of us is LL so it's not because of that). They seem to take it as a personal failure if their wife isn't happy. Not that I wouldn't care if my husband wasn't happy but I wouldn't necessarily feel like it was a reflection on me or my fault. I find it strange since it also seems to me that women benefit much more from marriage than men do and have the most to lose if the marriage ends. I haven't really validated the report, and generally I am deeply suspicious of some of the presumptions that economists have about human motivations - after all, their track record hardly inspires, and the notion that it's all about self-interest is dubious.


I also suspect people's reasons are as varied as the couples, and generalisations can easily be misleading here.

coconut, you made some great points. Although from what I've observed, single men frequently have a heck of a time getting the sex they want, too.
