Separation/Divorce or Not

I have been married for 8 years and we have 3 children (13, 6 and 2). Our relationship has been having problems for a long time now. We don't talk, laugh, have much in common any more except for the children. - I think I have fallen "OUT OF LOVE"!!.
He has problems with my oldest child and they don't get along at all (He is her stepdad). The other children are highly attached to him!! He is good to me and the children, but I have no desire for any physical or emotional involvement with him. I work full time so part of it is exhaustion but that is not going to change.
I don't want the children to get hurt from a separation or a divorce, but it is also not good for them to see parents that don't get along or "like" each other. I love him, but I don't think I am "IN LOVE" with him.
I can continue living like this, but he wants a physical and emotional partner, so we are thinking of splitting up.
I don't know if counseling would help since I have never done it and I am not sure if it could change the way I feel.
If we do split up - when is the right time to tell the children and what is the best way of getting them through this
ANY SUGGESTIONS, IDEAS, EXPERIENCES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
