Vacations: Have you ever vacationed with another family? How'd it go?

  • It was terrific! I'll do it every summer.
  • Some tensions surfaced but we got through it. I'd probably do it again.
  • We got into fights we didn't expect to. We probably won’t do it again.
  • NEVER AGAIN!

Actually, I'm thinking about finding another family to ski with next winter.

We've just gotten back from our annual ski trip (it's winter here) and are having all types of problems integrating our autistic child into the trip. Mainly because he lacks a lot of gross motor skills. At present, the creche is happy to have him for the AM and we spend the afternoon with him. But at 9, he's getting far too old to be left in the creche. DH and I could take turns looking after him in the lodge, but we really enjoy skiing together in the mornings. (One of us skis with DD in the afternoons.)

Leaving him with my parents isn't an option because he LOVES to go on holidays and would be inconsolable. We've even done the whole special needs - private instructor thing, but it's just not happening. He just doesn't have the leg strength or coordination to snow plough and has many meltdowns while on skis.

So, anyway, I'm thinking of trying to find another disabled family to ski with. A family who has one child that cannot ski. Perhaps we could take turns in minding the two non skiiers. I receive a disabled newsletter which includes all types of goings on in our city, so I may advertise in that. I do get a little worried about child protection issues, but I think the odds are low enough to risk it.
