Wow - how petty of him. I guess this is one area where I am lucky - my STBX said that he wants to avoid the household inventory, doesn't want to take much from the house because he doesn't want to disrupt things for our children. So we just went through together and agreed on a list of things he wants to take without valuing out everything else. He thinks this is fair and I am fine with it.
I think if he is getting down to valuing yarn, I wonder what *you* can get down to valuing - maybe he has a change jar? a set of CDs, videos, some 'special' magazines hidden in the drawer? LOL. Of course this would be being just as petty maybe but he might get it.
I am sorry you have to go through this. The whole situation is tough enough without the pettiness.
Take care and do hire someone to help with the valuation of property - it seems like he is being very unreasonable.
Your yarn stash isn't an "asset." (Hate to disappoint your STBX.). If you ran a store where you sold yarn or made something from the yarn which you sold in quantity, then it would

I have recently separated from my husband and took some of my things with me.

If he wants to get that petty then hire an appraissor and he will need to split the bill.
This is why I do not do divorce law.
Thanks,
UPDATE!!!
