My job requires me to travel. It could be anywhere from not traveling for entire month, to being gone 2-3 days at a time for maybe 1-2 weeks out of the month. I'm not sure if I'll be able to ask my stbx to take care of DD during these times. For all I know he won't even be in the state. I've considered hiring a nanny who can do this and can also watch my daughter after school. I don't want to have a live-in one though. I've also considered taking DD on some business trips; not sure how that would work out and she'd miss school. Thoughts? Anyone in this situation?

Yep.

I travel regularly. Let's say that I would not go anywhere for 3 months, then I could have 2 or 3 overseas trips over 2 months (or less), world wide, and that would get me out of town for a whole week.

I have most of the time a live-in au-pair (way cheaper than a nanny, and does also the housekeeping). Frankly, I hate having someone here, but now that my kid is hitting the tween years, I am looking with joy at the perspective of gaining a guest-room and finding a cleaning lady.

Lucky for me, my parents live in town, so when I travel the child stays at home during school days, and stays at grandma during the week-end. That is definitely helping a lot. I've been doing this for 5 yrs, and it works fine... it is difficult to go, but in fact it works out without issues.

Well I'm thankful that I'm not the only one in this situation! I'm a software consultant and work out of my home 100% of the time unless I'm at a client site. I thought of having a live-in au pair/nanny but I'm not sure how having a "roomie" would be. I can easily find a house with a room for her, but sharing the kitchen with her? And having someone around all the time? That would be strange. I wouldn't feel comfortable with her having boyfriends over either. I also don't like a lot of noise (stereo too loud?) I guess the idea is to make that person part of your family. Do I sound too restrictive for a live-in situation? :-) Do you have any tips on interviewing or using a placement agency?

I haven't read the other responses, but I do have to travel some for work as well. Normally it is during two times of the year--I just got done with one--this is the first week in four I'm not going somewhere...

During this time, I tend to rely on family... both mine and my xil's... my Mom will watch my son as will my xil's... my xh is out of state so he's not an option... do you have family as an option?

Good Luck... I'm sure you'll find the right answer for your situation!
