Kathy,

In general it's a good idea to have copies of the following documents:

  • IRS Tax returns for the past 3-5 years.
  • Current bank statement.
  • Current mortgage statment.
  • Investment or retirement account statement(s).
  • Insurance policies (home, life, health, disability, auto etc.)
  • A copy of your will (if you have one).
  • Loan statements (personal, auto, boat, student)
  • Bills: utility bills, credit card bills, any other bill that you pay regularly.
  • Any pre-nuptial agreement you have.

I also encourage people to know where their birth certificate is or get a notorized copy from the county in which you were born and your SSN card. These are imporant if you need to start over and set up your own bank accounts and you want to protect yourself from identify theft by an Ex spouse.

There may be others that our regular posters can think of also.

Good luck.

Many thanks for your reply. I have managed to find all of the documents that you mentioned. However, I know that my husband has stock options with his company but have been unable to find any evidence of them. His company operates on a "no contract" basis. Have you any ideas where I might look? Thanks, Kathy
